Miami Turkish Film Festival October 13th – 15th

Turkish Film Festival Miami: It should go without saying that the film industry, particularly in the United States, is a huge cash cow. There’s a reason film studios such as Universal Pictures, Paramount and Warner Bros make films: they generate a TON of money.

In 2015 we’ve already seen 4 films hit north of the $1 billion (yes with a ‘B’) mark in worldwide sales which included Jurassic World, Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Minions. The Film industry in the U.S. is a multi-billion dollar industry, but not every film has a blockbuster budget with the top actors in the world starring in them. And although the U.S./Canada film industry is the largest in the world, there are other countries that are gaining traction in the industry, Turkey being one of them.

Now if I asked you to name the Top 10 countries that are known for their film making, Turkey probably wouldn’t make that list. Yet interestingly enough Turkey has a long history of filmmaking, with the country showing its first movie back in 1895! But the tides are a changing. After receiving praise for the festivals 2014 showcase, the Miami Turkish Film Festival is right around the corner, taking place from October 13th through the 15th at the historic Colony Theatre located on Lincoln Road in South Beach.

At this years Miami Turkish Film Festival you can experience a variety of moving and riveting films such as The Miracle, a film by Turkish director Mahsun Kirmizigul that is based on the life of a teacher named Mahir in the 1960’s who was forced to leave his family behind and move to the other side of the country. Facing extreme hardships and missing his family, Mahir quickly becomes the poor, secluded villages beacon of hope. The film was Turkey’s most popular film (so far) of 2015. You can see a preview HERE.

Not only will the film be the Turkish Film Festival’s opener, they will also be welcoming the director himself, Mahsun Kirmizigul and fellow producer Murat Tokat.

Wednesday will feature two films, Coming Soon and The Husband Factor followed by an award winning feature of the film Sivas on Thursday. Sivas, directed by Kaan Mujdeci, was the recipient of the Special Jury Prize at the 71st Venice International Film Festival at the beginning of September and was chosen to be the Turkish entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards that are to take place on February 28th, 2016 in Los Angeles. The film follows the journey of an 11 year old boy named Aslan and a wounded and abandoned fighting dog named Sivas that he finds and befriends. You can see a preview of the film above. Director Kaan Mujdeci as well as child actor Dogan Izci will also be in attendance.

As Pamir Demirtas, the founder of Pinema Films and Executive Director of the Turkish Film Festivals explained, “The mission of the Turkish Film Festival is to showcase Turkish cinema and culture to the world. We want to make them accessible to everyone. We are very happy to be back in both San Francisco and Miami and we look forward to a successful run.”

The Turkish Film Festival is made possible with the support of the Republica of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Pinema and Turkish Film Festivals USA.
