The Mammography Art Initiative's 2nd Annual Art Show October 5th

October is fast approaching us. Probably most known for being the month Halloween falls on (aka a parents worst nightmare), October also lays claim to being the month dedicated to breast cancer awareness – something all of us here at The Local Miami take very seriously. Cancer in general is a unique disease where your body essentially turns on itself and attacks healthy cells. Not to be outdone, breast cancer has absolutely become an epidemic for women in the United States and beyond. The American Cancer Society has estimated that, for 2013, there will be approximately 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women with roughly 40,000 women ultimately succumbing to the disease. The chance of a woman being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in her lifetime is about 1 in 8. That’s right. 12.5% of women will eventually be diagnosed with an invasive form of breast cancer. Shocking isn’t it? But there is a bright side – breast cancer death rates have been going down. Why? Because of events like this.

The Mammography Art Initiative is spearheaded by medical students at FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine who advocate for better techniques to detect breast cancer earlier, better breast health services, providing women with better information and more affordable options to detect and treat breast cancer. The event takes place Saturday, October 5th from 6:30pm – 9:30pm at the Bakehouse Art Complex in the Wynwood Arts District. There will be guest speakers telling tales of their triumphs, and sorrows, with their or their loved ones battle’s with breast cancer as well as a silent auction. Cocktails and refreshments will also be available. Tickets are only $5 for students and general admission tickets are only $20.
