2009 Caleo Primitivo di Salento

This interesting medium bodied Italian red is produced with Primitivo grapes. Grown in the very southern tip if Italy in Puglia, just slightly outside of the “heel” of Italy (which produces more wine than any other region in Italy, roughly 14%), this wine captures the benefits of Puglia’s flat fertile plains as well as having the Meditteranean & Adriatic seas border its Southern & Eastern borders. Primitivo grapes are generally related to “California Zinfandel” (for those not too familiar with old world grape varietals.) This wine is deep ruby red in color with ripe cherry on the nose accompanied by lighter, fruity nuances. Velvety on the palate with intense cherry, plum & spice. Expect the same on the finish. Pairs particularly well with red meats, game & heavy pasta dishes.
